Laboratory Safety Rules: Follow all directions and safety instructions. Report all accidents, spills, and broken glass to the teacher. Only use the equipment as instructed. Do not eat or drink anything in the laboratory. Keep hair and clothing away from fire. Use all required safety equipment. Laboratory Safety Equipment: Safety Goggles: protect eyes from splashes Safety Apron: protect clothes from splashes Mitts: protect skin from hot surfaces and equipment Scientific Investigations:
Variable: thing that can be changed in an experiment; be sure to change only the variable you are Testing. Independent Variable: variable that is changed during the experiment; shown on the x-axis (horizontal axis) of a line graph. Dependent Variable: variable that responds to the independent variable; its value is measured and depends on the independent variable; shown on the y-axis (vertical axis) Control Group: used to compare experiment’s results to the “normal” conditions.

Laboratory Equipment: |
Volume is measured by liters (L) or milliliters (mL) in a graduated cylinder.
Length is measured by meters (m) or millimeters (mm) with a ruler or meter stick. |

Force is measured by Newtons (N) with a spring scale.
Temperature is measured by Celsius (°C) with a thermometer.
Mass is measured by grams (g) with a triple beam balance |
Contour Map (Topographic Map): lines connect points of equal elevation (height above sea level); the closer the lines are spaced, the steeper (greater) the change in elevation |
