| Hello! Welcome to the world of
AP English. The first part of this packet forms the basics of the AP
course. These items are aligned with both Hereford ISD policy and College
Board recommendations for the courses.
Description: AP English is a college level course designed to assist students in cultivating the analytical higher-level thinking skills tested on the AP Literature and Composition Exam as well as on the AP Language and Composition Exam. This course is intended for college-bound students who seek instruction and practice in critical thinking, sophisticated composition techniques, literary analysis, and a greater appreciation for both fiction and non-fiction. The credit offered: Juniors have the opportunity to take the AP Language Exam at the end of the year. If they score well, they can receive college credit, depending upon the college they choose to attend. Seniors may enroll in AP IV for dual credit from Amarillo College, and/or they may take the AP Literature Exam at the end of the year. A combination of the dual credit and one or both of the AP Exams can earn a student as many as 9 college hours. The credit actually granted, however, is up to the discretion of the college the student attends, so communication with the college registrar is essential. Acceptability of work: Because AP English is a college level course, the pace will be faster than other English courses. The assignments provide the opportunity to gain skills necessary to do well on both the exam and in future college work. LATE WORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. Additionally, students who are absent must submit their make-up work according to HISD policy. Students who miss class because of a student trip should make up all work BEFORE they leave. If this is not possible, they must make prior arrangements and complete the work within two days of returning to class. Plagiarism: Academic dishonesty (copying homework, cheating, plagiarism, using films and Cliffs Notes while failing to read the original books, etc) has no place in AP English, and I will not tolerate it. Plagiarism is the direct copying of any information from any source. If a student chooses to plagiarize or break any other rule involving academic dishonesty, he or she will receive a zero. Please see the HISD policy on cheating and plagiarism for the full district policy. Requirements for the course: You will need a loose-leaf notebook with dividers, notebook paper, and a pen in class each day. Be Prepared. If there is any rule for success in this class, that is it. Be on time, come every day, have your materials, complete your work on time.
Reminder: Failure to turn in assignments on time will result in a zero. NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED. This includes assignments missed because of school trips.
All classes must receive two test grades (60% of total average) and 8 daily grades (40% of total average) each six weeks. For Amarillo college classes, only essays and major tests count towards the final AC grade.
