English I—Pre-Advanced Placement  Syllabus

 

Course Objective:  The main objective of the English I-Pre AP curriculum to cultivate high level academic skills and independent study habits necessary for success in upper level AP courses.  Students will read, analyze, and evaluate selections from varied genres of literature and practice becoming focused, articulate writers.  The Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills Test (TAKS) objectives are the foundations of this course.   Students who pass the Advanced Placement tests can earn university credit.

 

Course Content:   

*TAKS reading and writing skills

*Vocabulary, spelling, grammar

*Poetry, short stories, nonfiction

*Research

*Frankenstein               Animal Farm              Romeo and Juliet              The Odyssey        Mythology

 

Course Evaluation:  Each student is expected to prepare for class by completing all assigned work and outside reading.  Absolutely NO LATE WORK will be accepted. 

Six Weeks Average                       Test = 60%                                        Daily = 40%

 

Semester Average                      Six Weeks = 25% each               Semester Test = 25%

 

The Student Handbook contains the HISD policy on make-up work, exemptions, plagiarism, and absences.  Students who miss class because of student trips should make all work within two days of returning to class.

 

Expectations and Guidelines:  Each student is held accountable for behavior, work ethics, attendance, and study habits. 

1.  Academic dishonesty  (copying homework, cheating, plagiarism, using films and Cliff’s Notes instead of reading the original material,  etc.) is not tolerated.   Plagiarism is the direct copying of information from any source.  See the HISD Academic Integrity and Academic Dishonesty policy. 

2.  A student who receives a failing grade for one or more six weeks may consider changing to another appropriate English class.

3. All students must follow HISD discipline policies, administrative directives, and classroom rules.

4. The student is responsible for books and novels used in class and must pay for damaged or lost books.  Each English paperback costs $15 to replace.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Classroom Rules:

1.  The teacher is in charge

2.  Respect is required.

3.  Academic honesty is essential.  Cheating, copying, plagiarism (Internet included) will result in a zero for all grades give for the assignment.

4.  No food, drinks, or gum are allowed in class.

5.  Students must stay in the classroom the full 50 minutes of class.

6.  Students must bring all necessary supplies and books to class every day.

7.  Students must prepare for class, follow the teacher’s directions, and complete all assigned work.

8.  NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED.  A student may arrange tutorial time before the assignment due date if help is needed.  Students who miss class because of student trips should turn in assignments before they leave.  All missed assignments must be turned in within two days of returning from a student trip.

 

Consequences:  Teacher consequences might include one or more of the following:  loss of privilege, essay writing, adjustment of seating, conference,  detention, referral to principal’s office, or other action to restore a proper learning environment.  Inappropriate behavior is documented.

          2.  Blue or black pens (all assignments must be done in blue or black ink)

          3.  Wide-ruled white notebook paper

          4.  Three-ring binder 1”-1 ½”

          5.  Dividers

These supplies are NOT OPTIONAL!!
